A good overview of the early stages and development of the American Communist Party. A must for understanding the political mindset of America in the early decades of this century. A standard book of its era; brief descriptive biographies of Charles and Ruth. The point of view is obviously biased. Dunaway, David. How Can I Keep From Singing: Pete Seeger. Pete's own writings, scattered over the course and travels of his life. The source for getting a true sense of what makes Pete tick. A valuable collection of selected writings by Charles. A variety of topics are covered, revealing the diversity of his interests. Strambler, Irwin and Landon, Grellun. Especially good biographies on Mike and Peggy, which were hard to locate anywhere else. The New Grove Dictionary of American Music. 4 vols. Edited by H. Wiley Hitchcock and Stanley Sadie. London: Macmillan, 1986. The definitive source for all American Music. Contains thoughtful biographies on all of the Seegers, contributed by their major biographers. Contains a short entry for Elizabeth Cotten, the only encyclopedia to do so. 10/88
