Harry Partch - note on files For this bibliography the most important resource was Thomas B. McGeary's work entitled The Music of Harry Partch; a descriptive catalog, Brooklyn: Institute for Studies in American Music, 1991. McGeary has worked with Ben Johnston for the past several years in completing such bibliographical and biographical studies. This work has been published along side a collection of Partch's writings, edited by McGeary entitled Bitter Music, Urbanna IL: University of Illinois Press, 1991. Due to the work of the scholar (McGeary) and the composer (Johnston), there has been a surge of activety concerning Partch in recent years. The most notable have been two new rereleases of previous recordings on CD, and the recent release of a live performance of Revelation in the Courthouse Park, from the 1987 American Festival of Contemporary music. In addition the following sources were used heavily: The Music Index, RILM, Arts & Humanities Citation Index, and the Index to Biographies of American Composers. Of great help was the Index to Biographies of American Composers. This list includes all major resource books which I could locate. PARCMP came from McGeary and Amerigrove. The list is complete. There are several smaller works which later became part of larger compositions. When this occurred, I listed the work and all of its revisions only under the title of the larger composition. Since none of the works are, to my knowledge, published, the dates listed stand for the copyright dates. In most cases, the pieces are listed with their instrumentation. Since the cast of characters for dramatic works was also listed in PARDISC, There were not listed here. PARWRI is not extensive, due to the fact that most of Partch's writings are contained in only two books - Genesis and Bitter Music. PARDIS is also not extensive, but I believe there will be an increase in scholarship on Partch due to the recent work of McGeary and Johnston. PARDSC is also from McGeary. This list is very complete with listings of personnel and reissues. PARARL is a culmination of compilations from the above mentioned sources. Those before 1974 come from McGeary, those after come from the others. PARNSP - culled from ARL The bibliography of writings about Partch in McGeary is extremely comprehensive. It contains detailed articles which appeared in various newspapers. These were collected in order to compile an oral history for Partch. I included them in this file. Although not necessarily scholarly in nature, this type of information is extremely useful in researching events in Partch's life, especially his early career. This Bibliography is very near completion. As is usually the case, however, it is very possible that when I get into the research a bit deeper, I may discover some additional sources. I have a hunch that there has been more published in the past year, than I have been able to locate as of yet. JB 4/92
