Irving Berlin - note on files The starting point for books about Irving Berlin was The New Grove Dictionary of American Music. Other sources grew out of bibliographies from works cited in the Amerigrove. BNCMP Entries in this file were taken from Bergreen. It is likely that there are more works by Berlin; however, this list is by far the most comprehensive currently available in print. For information on songs not listed, perhaps Hal Leonard Corporation of Milwaulkie, Wisconsin, which now owns the rights to Irving Berlin's works, could be of service. BLNWRI Berlin did not publish much written prose. Selections in this file consist of published letters, statements, etc. in the New York Times. Citations were taken from the New York Times Index, 1918-1948. Again, there is a possibility that Berlin may have left behind some writings; howver, none of the published books on Irving Berlin, or general resources list any. BLNDIS No dissertations were listed in the Comprehensive Dissertation Indicies. No unpublished writings about Irving Berlin or his works were included in bibliographies of general resources or published writings about Irving Berlin. 1 dissertation listed. BLNDSC Several of the entries in the Selected Discography were found in Phonolog Reporter, San Diego: Trade Service, 1992. The quarterly journal, Spectrum, of Stereophile, Inc., Sante Fe, New Mexico, was another source for entries in the Selected Discography. Entries of specific recordings were taken from the AMMUSIC database in the Music Listening Center at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Books which are listed include discographies of Berlin's works. This is a selected discography. Further listings might be found by searching the recordings of important stars of Berlin's productions, or by searcing the specific works by title. BLNARL Many of the entries listed were found in the the Music Index of Periodical Literature, 1948-1991. Some entries were taken from the Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature, 1910-1948. A large number of the entries were taken from the New York Times Index, 1910-1948. Regretably there is not an index which includes music articles in Variety Magazine prior to 1948. This list is as comprehensive as the published indicies allow. With access to early publications of Variety Magazine, more articles would be found. 3/92
