This division of the AMR collection is intended to hold citations of 
general and historical information relating to the topic. It does not
duplicate the information found under the various styles. Bok and ref 
are fairly good but ant and dsc are incomplete.

William Grant Still

George Walker won the Pulitzer for vocal/orchestral piece called "Lilacs" 
based on a Whitman poem.  He's the first black man to win this prize.

Duke Ellington 

James Newton, teaches at University of California, Irvine Music Dept.
Los Angeles Phil recently commissioned a new piece by him - yet to be 
performed 

Alvin Singleton. He used to be composer in residence with the
Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. may still be in Atlanta.

African Portraits, by Hannibal Lokume (a Teldec CD 4509 98802-2) -- a
colorful work for symphony orchestra, black chorus, gospel singer,
baritone, tenor, African drummers, African griot, blues guitarist, jazz
quartet.
